Ottawa researchers say they have become the first in the country to develop a test that detects a variant of the COVID-19 virus in wastewater — recently detecting it in a sample from Barrie, Ont

Scientists monitoring Ottawa's wastewater say detected levels of the coronavirus changed course in early June, which coincided with the end of Ontario's stay-at-home order and could signal a rise in cases.

Ottawa’s COVID-19 wastewater levels have dropped near the limits of where researchers can detect the virus, the project’s principal investigator said on Friday.

As more infectious COVID-19 variants take hold in Ontario, scientists are looking at wastewater testing in Ottawa to keep track of variants like B.1.617, which was first identified in India and also known as Delta.
